Peter Malnati Slams LIV Golf and PGA Tour Over ‘Sick’ Money Obsession: ‘Don’t Think Our Fans Care’

“To have this moment, it just feels so amazing,”  confessed an exhilarated and teary-eyed Peter Malnati with his son in his arms after claiming his second win on the men’s circuit. This image appears to have resonated beyond just the casual golf fan and seems to have marked itself in the history of the sport. Interestingly, this, according to the champ, is what people want to see rather than discussion and debate on the money.

The PGA Tour Board Member was responding to a query about the iconic and heartwarming moment in an interview ahead of the Texas Children’s Houston Open on Wednesday, March 27. Meanwhile, as he did so, he went ahead and took a jab at the Saudi-backed league as well as the Jay Monahan-led circuit, all the while urging for the attention of the community to focus on the product on the greens.

“I think people are sick of that,” said the golfer as he alluded to the money aspect of the game that has been talked about a lot recently. Adding on, however, he made sure to rope in the PIF-funded circuit and the PGA Tour to the midst, as he mentioned, “I think people are sick of the narrative in golf being about, you know, contracts on LIV, purses,… guaranteed comps on the Tour.”

Also, the 36-year-old pointed out the true need of the fans as he said, “They want to see sport,… people who are the best in the world at what they do, do it at a high level and celebrate that.” What’s more, although the American made sure to express the need to compensate the athletes fairly, he couldn’t help but also highlight the need for the “narrative, the storylines, the conversation… to come back to the product on the course and what we do.”

In the meantime, commenting on the memory that Peter Malnati shared with his son on the greens after his win, he made sure to emphasize how he hoped it would connect with more people. Moreover, he disclosed, “I’m going to enjoy it and we’re going to do a lot of good in this world, but it had nothing to do with that,” while alluding to the winner’s cut of $1,512,000 from the $8.4 million prize purse.

Recounting the moment that followed his victory at the Valspar Championship, the athlete was visibly emotional after the same. One can’t help but wonder what he actually said for the interviewer to dub the moment as something that transcended the game.

The 36-year-old’s son, sporting a superhero cape, came and hugged him as soon as he clinched his victory at the PGA Tour event. That’s not all; Peter Malnati shed tears of joy as he embraced his kid while responding to the interview. He said, “I told myself that I was gonna do my best on every shot, and that’s what I did,” before going ahead to admit tearfully, “You can’t describe it, it’s so cool, it’s so cool to share it with, like… it’s just amazing, it’s just amazing.”

Meanwhile, after thanking his caddie, Chad Antus, who supported him on the greens, Malnati broke down again as he expressed his gratitude to his family, including his wife, mom, and two boys: “Life is really really hard too when you’re trying to figure out how to live this lifestyle and have two kids and be everything that you wanna be… and my wife has been an absolute rock through all of it.”
